It's 7 in the evening, the kids are asleep and the house looks nice. I like Sunday evenings, that's the time to overlook the coming week and all exciting things to come. Plan and prepare as much as you can and then go have a mini-spa session in the bathroom, doing a face mask. We're about to have some cheese and crackers when we're done with everything. That's one good thing about having children who got to bed around 6:30-7: You get a long evening to yourselves and time to do something together. The office for the evening! By the way, just got a question from a reader: "Hi Bella! I have a little boy at home, just one week old now. Unfortunately I had difficulties breastfeeding him when we where still in the maternity hospital. He doesn't take the breast, or he tries, but he doesn't get a good grip so he can't hold on to it. But then I got a supplemental nipple from a nurse and after that things are going a lot easier! However, even though I'm super fond of the nipple, it seems as if people are very negative about it on different webpages etc. Doing some research, I bumped into one of your blog posts and how you fed Sally with a supplemental nipple? (Maybe you did the same with Gillis?). I just wanted to ask someone who's been in the same situation how it worked out for you? For example, what have the children's health center told you about using the nipple? I'm worried he's not getting the amount of milk he actually needs and I get a bit concerned reading that you're not supposed to use the supplemental nipple for a longer period of time and that your baby has to suck harder when you use the nipple. This kind of information really makes you feel like a bad mom, not trying harder to make it work without any help... I'm hoping you want to share your experiences and tell me what reactions/criticism you've gotten?" Hi! I breastfed with a supplemental nursing system with both children and it was a struggle adjusting to breastfeeding without it. "You should start doing it the natural way as soon as you can" I was told. But that's easier said than done. My nipples rather go inwards than outwards and I have to squeeze like crazy to give my baby something to suck on (everything is flat). I've heard about something called the hamburger-grip that's supposed to help, but I didn't make any progress with that even though I got professional help from the children's health center. Also, breastfeeding really hurt for me in the beginning so I used the supplemental nipple during the whole breastfeeding period. My tips are to always have two of the small yellow devices (Medela size M or L worked for me) with you all the time if you're a not very orderly person like me. I didn't wet or fold them to create "suction", I just put the nipple wherever I thought my nipple was (hehe) and then it worked. Breastfeeding in bed wasn't a problem either, I just used my phone for light to find the right spot. And most of times it got stuck to my skin (because of sweating?) so the kids could take the breast, sleep, take the breast and then sleep again without me having to replace it. Peace of cake. I know a lot of people are a bit skeptical when it comes to a supplemental nipple, and I can only speak for me, but I would never have breastfed without it so I'm very grateful for its' existence. :)
