[showhide type="post" more_text="Show english translation..." less_text="Show less..."] That's fine if you could even get a job as an 17 year old... I'm sure MacDonald's will soon be asking you for two years experience and an education... it's hard times Bella, jobs don't appear out of nowhere, especially not for teens. I understand that things will differ depending on where you live but in Stockholm you can get a job as an 18 year old. MacDonald's is a great example, but other restaurants and cafes need staff too, plus you can work as a dog sitter, nanny, till assistant, fair assistant. During the summer lots of jobs crop up in tourist spots. Don't give up! There are jobs but whether you get one depends on how picky you are. On my Facebook page Blondinbella I am currently advertising a position at VJ1890, it's a half-time job as a marketing assistant. If you live in Stockholm you should apply, we don't have an age requirement. How did you get your first job? How did you get that to fit with your studies and what did you prioritize? If Gillis would struggle in school and need to study extra during the summer, would he be forced to work instead? I got my first job when I was 14. I sold tickets for club parties and got 20% commission. Then I wanted to make more money and started hosting club parties together with Stockholms stad (somewhere for under-18s to hang out). I held talks for Gymnasieguiden when I was in the eighth grade, it involved meetings with principals and offering them a student perspective on choosing a high school. I worked in a cafe in Gamla Stan when I was 16 and worked part-time at my dad's firm during the same period that I started making money on the blog. Do I even need to answer the last question? Of course not. What's your reasoning here? Not that long ago you told us how much money you have put into your son's trust fund. We have three children and we've helped them with everything from their studies, furniture for their first apartment, getting their driving licence and pocket money. We would rather cut back on spending on ourselves because we felt that they shouldn't enter into adulthood with debt. We're not high income-takers but making an average living. All three of them have turned out well and have good jobs. What you're saying doesn't seem well thought-through. Of course kids can work part-time but that only earns them a pittance. The fact that we want Gillis to work part-time has nothing to do with how we view putting money aside from him or your closing statement that "they only earn a pittance". It's not the sum that's the important thing but that he learns the value of money and gets work experience. Just so he knows what it feels like. Even though Gillis will get a sum of money when he moves out that's not intended for food, rent etc. when he moves out, that money is earmarked for him to buy an apartment. Then it's up to him to make sure it works out. My little brother got help to find somewhere to live when he moved out, but my parents would never pay for his rent or his gym membership. He's worked throughout high school and still has a job now that he's studying at university. In Stockholm you need a part-time job to finance your studies, that's how big cities work. I'm wondering how many high school students you have employed to work this summer? We have three high school students working for us. Mirza, Teres and Adam. If people could get their kid a well-paid summer job like you will, you can think that way. But is Gillis meant to work at MacDonald's and still afford your lifestyle? Gillis' clothes cost the same as what most teens get in pocket-money for a month. Or did you expect him to stay at hoe when you travel and not have a phone? Or maybe you want him to buy second hand and have an old Nokia with pay as you go? It doesn't sound like you've thought this through... Just because we expect Gillis to have a part-time job it doesn't mean that he has to survive on that along. The money that he earns will be his to spend as he wishes. Money that he can use to do something fun or to put in a saving's account. We're his parents and we will support him but it's important to us that he doesn't take that for granted. Working part-time will teach him the worth of money and that will make him respect money more. Besides, it's always more satisfying to buy something you really want with your own money than to just be given it.
