The other day, I wrote a blog entry about BB Sophia (maternity hospital) is being closed down and that I don't think that the birth topic is as high priority as I feel it should be. All women have the right to know where they are giving birth and to not be left high and dry when they're facing the toughest moment of their life. I turned to our health care minister Gabriel Wikström (Soc.Dem.) and Ella Bohlin (KD), who's child and elderly care county councillor in Stockholm, which means responsible for the particular topic of childbirth. I got an answer from Ella Bohlin today! Basic translation into English: Hi Isabella! I can only say I am deeply sorry that BB Sophia won't be run by the Swedish NHS in the future; we could've done with these spaces. Believe me, this was NOT how I envisaged the childbirth care. And no, this is not a political decision that neither I nor my colleagues within the council has made. I have been at BB Sophia a number of times and as you probably realise there has been a continuous dialogue between us the parties of the political management team, not least the health care council, to try to solve this. Childbirth IS a high priority topic. That's why we've increased the grant of the open NHS choice, in order to be able to hire more midwives and have implemented a direct strategy for midwives. And that's why the percentage of women, who've been allowed to give birth at the maternity ward of their choice, has increased. The number of women that had to give birth outside the county of Stockholm was reduced by 20 percent last year. What you describe is one part that hasn't been included. For example, that Praktikertjänst (the owner) has admitted they've made an error and that they haven't had a feasible calculation for BB Sophia from the start. The health care council are now going through all childbirth locations and checking where the number can be increased. We are focusing on solving this issue, so that there will be enough capacity within Stockholm county. As I'm writing this, BB Sophia ward hasn't yet given their notice of termination. If it comes to this, there will have to be a six month notice period, where we will gradually increase the care places at other location, so that we'll always have enough capacity. It currently seems as though this is achievable. If Praktikertjänst chooses not to terminate the maternity care at BB Sophia, I will be the first one to welcome this decision. Our goal is that as small a percentage as possible will be directed to another maternity ward. Ella Bohlin (KD) Child and elderly care councillor Thank you for your answer, truly!
