Jag får många frågor angående om Natural Cycles får kalla sig ett preventivmedel eller inte och efter att jag träffade grundarna förra veckan känner jag att jag kan förklara lite utifrån deras ord. Det finns idag inte någon p-app eller p-dator på marknaden som är klassad som preventivmedel och Natural Cycles jobbar tillsammans med läkemedelsverket på att bli den första. Natural Cycles är ISO-certifierad som en medicinteknisk produkt, precis på samma sätt som de p-datorer som funnits på marknaden länge. Företaget vill klassificera appen som ett preventivmedel, såsom t ex kondomen, och har jobbat på det länge. Dock anser de som utför klassificeringen att appen inte fyller samma funktion som ett preventivmedel gör, eftersom preventivmedlet i slutändan är det skydd som används på röda dagar (kondom), inte själva appen. Läkemedelsverket håller dock inte med och har därför startat en utredning på europeisk nivå om vad fertilitetsmonitorer ska klassificeras som. Tills detta är löst får Natural Cycles inte kalla sig för preventivmedel i Sverige (det är däremot ok i Schweiz, USA, etc). Kanske är benämningen fertilitetsapp mer passande ändå, då det finns fler användningsområden som t ex att planera en gravidet, följa sin graviditet, eller bara för att ha koll på sin ägglossningen, PCOS eller PMS.

Vad vi tycker är lite märkligt är att läkemedelsverket också sagt att Natural Cycles inte får visa eller dela information där något negativt skrivs om p-piller. Detta innebär att de inte får dela alla berättelser som de får in dagligen från alla användare om att de mår bättre efter att ha slutat med p-piller, etc. Hur konstigt är inte det?

I get so many questions about whether Natural Cycles can be called a contraceptive or not and after I met the founders of this company last week, I feel I can explain a bit more based on their own words. There is currently no birth control app/computer on the market that's labelled as a contraceptive and Natural Cycles are working with the Swedish Medical Product Agency (FDA equivalent) to become the first. Natural Cycles are ISO-certified as a medical product, just like the birth control computers that've been on the market for a long time. The company wants to classify the app as a contraceptive, like a condom for instance, and have been working on this for ages. The people doing the actual classification of the app feel it doesn't fill the same function as a pill or condom, as the contraceptive forms a physical protection used on "red days" and the app can't perform this task. The Medical Product Agency, however, does not agree and have therefore started an investigation on a European level into what fertility monitors should be classified as. Until all this has been solved, Natural Cycles aren't allowed to call themselves a contraceptive in Sweden (it is however OK in Switzerland, USA etc). Maybe the phrase fertility app is more suitable anyway, as it has a range of uses such as pregnancy planning, tracking the pregnancy, or just keeping tabs on ovulation, PCOS or PMS.

What we find a bit strange is that the MPA have also told Natural Cycles not to show or share information where anything negative is written about the contraceptive pill. That means they can't share all the stories they receive daily from their users about feeling better after quitting the pill etc. How weird is that?
